What is Router

What is Router and How Does it Works?

It is the right time for you to know what a router is and the indicated way in which you should use it at home. You may have the electronic device at home, but you have no idea how it works. Routers are used to extend the internet connection from a fixed point such as the modem to your mobile devices, tablets, and computers.

Connect Devices

However, you may still have doubts about the operation of the device, and it is only fair that you solve them now. After you know the importance of routers, you may appreciate their work. Routers have become essential for the home because everyone wants to be connected to the internet.

What is a router?

A router or router is nothing more than an internet device that takes the connection from a modem or a local server and sends it to various locations. Routers are like the connection bridge between the internet and your mobile device, computer, or tablet.

The routers are responsible for receiving the connection data, analyzing it, and forwarding it to the connected devices. They are hardware devices with no limits to connecting devices wireless or even with cables.

The device has an embedded operating system that stores data and I/O points on the network. Even though you intuit that the operating system used by the router is Mac or Windows, the reality is that it is a unique software for the device.

The embedded software will use an algorithm to link all connection data between devices in a routable table. In this way, the router will know which device it will send the internet connection to and which one will not.

To understand more about the connection offered by the router, it is good that you know about the EX. This plugin is a message that gets the packet from a local internet connection and sends it to the correct point. The messenger or EX does not fail to send the data from point A where it was received, the router, to point B, the device.

How does a router work?

With a basic definition of what a router is and the role of the messenger or EX, you will wonder how exactly it works. Routers are devices that take data packet information from a local connection and send it to other destinations. However, the operation of these devices is more complex than you think.

When you send a message on Facebook to one of your friends, this information is sent to the closest router, that is, the one you would have at home.

After the message, which is now a data packet, reaches the router, the information will be sent to another protocol. The router will take care of sending your message to your friend’s router across town so they can read it.

The technology that the router uses to know to whom exactly it will send the packet corresponding to the message on Facebook is called the IP address.

When creating that connection with the receiver, the router traps the IP address to know the destination route. All the processes of sending messages or other data are verified by both routers, both the one that sends and the one that receives the packet.

Routers do a great job on the internet, which is why they gain so much priority among people. This internet device is made up of:

  • A CPU that is responsible for sending and receiving data packets.
  • A flash memory where the data is stored.
  • A non-volatile RAM with which the information is processed.
  • A RAM that backs up the non-volatile RAM.
  • A network interface to provide the connection between ports.
  • A console that controls the turning on and off of the device.

Different types of routers

You can buy one for the home with all the basic concepts about a router and how it works. However, you will have to pay for a wired internet connection before making this investment. These internet hosts are very easy to find in India, and their prices are varied.

After establishing the internet connection, you can purchase the device to access it. Routers are usually differentiated into several types such as:

  • Wired or band routers.

One of India’s oldest and most widely used routers are wireline or band routers. These devices will connect you to the internet through the LAN connection cable or USB in some cases. You will need a central internet connection to use the router correctly.

  • Wireless routers.

If you want to provide internet to your mobile device, computer, tablet, and smart TV, you need a wireless router. This device will serve to distribute the internet connection among all the devices. You can configure the router to only distribute the internet to people who have the access password.

  • Border routers.

They are wireless routers, but they work with an ISP at their side because all they do is distribute the connection. These devices cannot be used in the house because their connection will depend on a modem.

  • Perimeter routers

If you want to have one of the most efficient routers, you should buy the perimeter ones. They are wireless devices that will help you distribute the internet connection without an ISP provider.

  • Routers delimited between web providers.

The fenced routers serve to connect each of the ISPs to the provider. You can also stay signed in to Vodafone, Reliance, and Airtel.

  • Central routers.

They are routers usually used in large apartments to provide an internet connection to all guests. They are high-power wireless routers that you will pay for the service, but you will not have it at home. The connection of these routers is usually limited to the apartment or the group of houses that paid for it.

Setting up a router

If you’ve decided to buy a broadband, wireless, or edge router, you may need help trying to set it up. The steps to follow so that you can have your router up and running are:

Wi-Fi Connectivity

  1. Connect the device to a power supply using the default charger. It would help if you also connected the internet cable to the router.
  2. You must use a LAN cable to link the device with your computer to access its configuration platform. You will have to enter the router’s default IP address to enter the configuration.
  3. Within the configuration screen, you can give your router a name and, of course, an access code. In this section, you could also configure the IP addresses that can connect.
